This type of ash catcher has been around for as along as I can remember. They were everywhere even back in the 1970's. Smooth wood has an inlay of brass stars and moons, for a cute magickal looking design.
 
Place the wooden end of a stick of incense in the hole, the stick burns and ash falls onto the tray. once it's done, discard the ashes.
 
These aren't perfect. If you have a silk table cloth, perhaps consider a closed buner that will catch every bit of ash. These work well though for a normal setting. I use one on my coffee table and also outside when doing rituals in my yard.
