Magical Properties & Uses:
Rue has a long history of use as a cleansing herb for protection. Tied in bunches to clear people and areas with holy water in churches. Worn or placed over doorways to protect from the evil eye. Used for banishing, warding and protection from disease and other negative influences. In the middle ages, because cats hate the smell of rue, it was believed rue could ward off witches and their familiars. Later it was mixed into incense by the church during exxorcisms, and called the “herb of grace”.
